- Provide the total range of community college academic, transfer and career counseling to focus on current and former foster youth, including orientation and the development of student educational plans (SEP).
- Provide personal counseling to assist students in addressing a variety of personal challenges, including relationships, interpersonal communication, psychological and behavioral difficulties, decision making, chemical dependency problems, gender/sexuality issues, and health concerns.
- Provide referrals to external community agencies for housing assistance, and health, mental health and/or professional counseling.
- Interpret English/math assessments.
- Administer and interpret behavioral skills assessments.
- Instruct counseling classes for college success, career planning, study skills and transfer preparation.
- Provide Independent Living instruction and facilitate small groups for students on topics of interest as appropriate.
- Provide special assistance for students on academic probation.
- Meet with faculty and other academic staff as necessary to support the individual educational programs of students.
- Participate in program development for the Next Up Program, coordinate activities or specialized programs, and evaluate activities or specialized programs.
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with partners on campus and in the community.
- Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed.
- Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning.
- Work and/or teaching assignments in various instructional settings and times, including evening/weekends, online or off-campus and large group instruction as needed; perform duties of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to equity-minded practice.
and
- Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development; AND
- One of the following: (1) Nine semester units related to ethnic minorities or disadvantaged groups; OR (2) Six semester units or equivalent of counseling practicum/field-work in a community college EOPS program or similar setting; AND
- Two years of occupational experience related to ethnic minorities or disadvantaged groups; OR a valid California Community College Credential; or equivalent education/experience (requires equivalency).
Note: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification. If degrees listed do not match exactly, you must petition for equivalency.
Desirable Qualifications- Experience incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into responsibilities.
- Experience with racially minoritized students and understanding of historical patterns of exclusion in higher education.
- Experience with students from various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities.
- Willingness to remediate practices to better support racially minoritized students; related work experience; strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience in EOPS; experience coordinating grant-funded or categorical programs; ability to work with diverse populations; ability to prioritize workload; ability to conduct and develop educational workshops.
- Proficiency with relevant computer applications and technology; commitment to participatory governance and team approach.
