Position SummaryThe Social Studies Teacher, under the general supervision of the school principal(s), facilitates student learning by implementing district-approved curriculum to develop students' knowledge and skills in history and the social sciences. The teacher promotes critical thinking, responsible citizenship, and an understanding of historical and contemporary issues by delivering engaging instruction; assessing and documenting student progress; addressing individual learning needs; and creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
The teacher communicates effectively with students, parents/guardians, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
- This Social Studies position will be for our personalized learning team in Pirate Academy.
- Training in personalized learning will be provided.
- Candidate will be teaching multigrade classes.
- Develops and administers social studies curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
- Develops lesson plans and utilizes instructional materials that translate into meaningful student learning experiences centered on historical events.
- Teaches social studies content, including history, geography, economics, political science, systems of government, responsible citizenship, and the humanities.
- Develops students' understanding of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups, including the role and impact of socio-economic status and factors influencing human rights and freedom.
- Fosters an understanding of the continuity and patterns of human behavior over time and the complexity and interrelationship of local, state, national, and global challenges and solutions.
- Demonstrates how historical perspectives provide a comparative basis for evaluating current issues and predicting future courses of action, with ongoing connections to contemporary topics.
- Develops students' research, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills through reading, writing, discussion, and presentation activities that promote problem-solving and independent thinking.
- Promotes students' critical analysis of media influence on information flow and public discourse related to global and societal issues.
- Establishes standards for critical analysis through structured group discussions and engagement with a variety of reading materials.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress and adjusts instructional methods to meet individual student needs.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of student grading and attendance in accordance with district and building procedures and policies.
- Encourages student and parent/guardian involvement in the educational process and maintains effective communication.
- Ensures student behavior aligns with school and district policies and establishes standards of conduct necessary for an effective learning environment.
- Collaborates with colleagues, participates in faculty meetings and professional development, and serves on appropriate committees.
- Selects and utilizes appropriate instructional materials and strategies consistent with district curriculum.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Missouri Social Science 5-9 certification.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and student success.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal(s).
