The Library Assistant is a full‑time non‑exempt position that reports to the Librarian and Research Instructor. The Library Assistant provides clerical and technological support and assists student and faculty library users with information services.
This position is expected to be on campus throughout the school year from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday, with revised and extended hours during semester exam study week.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with daily library operations, including opening and closing procedures.
- Assists with fulfilling student and faculty requests for library materials, including books, periodicals, and course reserves.
- Assists students and faculty with routine online catalog and database queries.
- Oversees all circulation desk procedures using Follett Destiny Library Manager.
- Generates and sends electronic overdue book notices to students and staff in a timely manner.
- Assists with the acquisition and processing of new materials, entering records in the online catalog, and maintaining records.
- Updates lists of books, films, software, and other acquisitions and distributes to faculty.
- Shelves books, magazines, and other library holdings by format and genre.
- Assures accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and reshelving of materials.
- Conducts physical inventories of library collection, comparing online catalog records with items on shelves, and verifying the accuracy of holdings information.
- Provides student supervision during breaks, X‑period, and after school.
- Oversees after‑school library monitor and test proctor.
- Operates a variety of standard office and library machines.
- Performs a variety of library clerical tasks, including book repairs and tracking library supply levels, reordering as needed.
- Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with special projects and initiatives.
- High School diploma, training, or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to relate to high school students and build positive relationships while maintaining healthy boundaries.
- High-level of familiarity and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives.
Some knowledge of library procedures and filing systems preferred. - Some knowledge of and skill in using audiovisual equipment, office equipment, and computers and/or the ability to learn the use of equipment quickly with some training.
- Demonstrated ability to read, alphabetize, file, type, and perform basic clerical tasks and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
