DEFINITIONRenders professional medical services as an independent physician, or as part of a post graduate educational program under the supervision of a medical staff for the purpose of moonlighting.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDSPhysicians with the Postgraduate Training License (PTL) and in moonlighting assignments work under general direction of medical staff and are responsible for providing medical care and treatments in a medical specialty field to a variety of patients during a period of post graduate education in a hospital approved for such training. Postgraduates in this class receive varying degrees of direction by physicians and medical staff in providing medical care and treatments based on the amount of training and knowledge gained in the medical specialty, and must follow established department policy, procedures, and guidelines as determined by medical specialties and sub-specialties.
The PTL may engage in the practice of medicine as described below only in connection with his or her duties as a resident physician in a board-approved program, including affiliated sites, or under those conditions as are approved in writing and maintained in the PTL s file by the director of his or her program.

Responsibilities include conferring with attending and staff physicians regarding care and treatment of patients, assisting them in examining and treating patients; providing general medical consultation services; securing cooperation and/or permission for treatment from patients and relatives; examining, diagnosing and treating patients in admitting and treatment rooms, clinics, wards and in homes; performing medical duties in diagnostic and special services; working with interns and nursing personnel regarding the care of patients;
writing orders, reviewing patient charts and records; determining the necessity for laboratory tests; ordering and interpreting results; conferring with professional personnel in medical and related fields; assisting in epidemiological work and the enforcement of rules relating to communicable disease control; prescribing needed therapy, reviewing the progress of patients and adapting treatment as necessary; conducting post-mortem examinations and assisting in carrying out laboratory studies to discover the main and contributing causes of death;
certifying as to the cause of death; testifying in court as an expert Medical witness when necessary; assisting in the planning and direction of health programs; conducting research, special studies, and surveys; providing technical supervision to a professional or non-professional staff involved in providing direct patient care.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Postgraduate Training License issued by the Medical Board of California - and - enrollment in an American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency program.
