The Deputy Medical Director – Behavioral Health and Recovery Services is a full‑time, 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) position. This role provides leadership and supervision to multiple outpatient multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists and other clinicians. The Deputy Medical Director serves as the Designated Institutional Official for all ACGME‑accredited programs in San Mateo County, reports directly to the Medical Director, and may act in the Medical Director’s absence.
- Direct, administer, and coordinate medical services across the health system’s BHRS.
- Exercise direct and indirect supervision over all levels of medical, professional, technical, and support staff.
- Participate in the overall management of division and inter‑division matters.
- Develop standards of care, recommend and evaluate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure program goals in quality, safety, patient and staff experience, and financial stewardship are met.
- Provide surveillance and planning for improvement of medical care.
- Act as liaison between administration and physicians, offering expert consultation on clinical and human‑resources issues.
- Review incident reports, identify hazards, and recommend improvements.
- Train and supervise interns and residents, serving as psychiatric reviewer and interviewer for county‑wide workplace violence situations.
- Assist the Medical Director with a range of strategic and operational responsibilities.

- Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry with at least three years of supervising psychiatrists or residents.
- Strong interest and knowledge of policy, planning, and performance measurement in behavioral health.
- Preferred knowledge of substance use disorder treatment, medication‑for‑addiction, and EPIC electronic medical records.
- Experience with integrated care for serious mental illness and co‑occurring substance use disorders.
- Leadership in fostering integrated care for clients with serious mental illness and co‑occurring disorders.
- Provide direct services and supervision to adult clients.
- Clinical consultation and guidance to other physicians.
- Program planning, mentoring, and supervision of adult psychiatric residents, including oversight of graduate medical education.
- Quality improvement activities: reviews of hospital admissions, level‑of‑care requests, research proposals.
- Electronic medical record support and facilitation of informatics activities.
- Co‑chair the BHRS Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee; support pharmacy services.
- Assist with regulatory and fiscal activities involving health plans.
- Assume duties of the Medical Director in their absence.
- Member of the Residency Training Committee; participate in selection and evaluation.
- Regular meetings with the BHRS Medical Director.
- Review grievances for psychiatrists, approve timecards, organize coverage, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Completion of an adult psychiatry residency and at least three years of experience supervising psychiatrists or residents.
Licensure / Certification
- License to practice medicine or osteopathy in California.
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
