Location

Senior Architect – Santa Barbara or Santa Maria (countywide support may be required). The incumbent will report to the Capital Division Chief and may be assigned projects throughout the County.

Position

The County of Santa Barbara’s General Services Department is seeking a highly motivated Architect. The position will report directly to the Capital Division Chief and is responsible for a wide variety of job duties including conceptual design development, permitting coordination, code review, space planning, project team partnership, RFP development, construction coordination, and related work.

Department

The General Services Department provides support services to other County Departments and this position resides in the department’s Capital Projects Division.

Ideal Candidate Will Possess
  • Knowledge of professional architectural functions.
  • Experience in coordinating planning, contract administration, and architectural design.
  • A working knowledge of the U.S. Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings and how they apply to the County’s landmark buildings.
  • Ability to work with a diverse staff, the public, regulatory agencies, other county departments and the executive management team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple projects occurring simultaneously.
  • Self‑motivation, organization, prioritization, and ability to meet deadlines and execute detailed construction plans to completion.
  • Ability to make informed, sound decisions supported with data.
  • Effective communication of ideas and goals for process improvements.
  • Ability to handle high‑stress situations.
  • Preparation and writing of clear, concise communications, and maintenance of organized records.
  • Processing, interpreting, and communicating program‑specific information to all County staff and the general public.
  • Maintenance of confidential and sensitive information accordingly.
  • Excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD software.
  • Commitment to the Capital Projects and Facilities/Maintenance (F/M) Division’s shared values, including efficiency, excellent customer service, teamwork, respect, ethics, leadership, work‑life balance, and innovation.
Examples of Duties
  • Perform architectural design for specific General Services Capital and F/M projects, including elevations and floor plans for bidding through the Job Order Contracting (JOC) method.
  • Prepare and review cost estimates.
  • Prepare outline specifications for programmed projects.
  • Review requests from county departments for construction or remodeling and consult on design requirements.
  • Coordinate with other departments in preparation and administration of design and construction contracts.
  • Review zoning requirements such as land use, setbacks, height, fire sprinklers, and parking.
  • Conduct code compliance reviews for plumbing, electrical, mechanical, ADA, fire code, seismic, and green building requirements.
  • Administer design and construction contracts by reviewing designs, specifications, cost estimates, progress reports, invoices, and construction activities.
  • Evaluate completed projects and verify contractual compliance.
  • Partner with GS Capital and F/M project managers on major County projects, consulting with design architects as a core function of the County project team.
  • Assist with master planning and site development for future county property utilization.
  • Coordinate staff design, development and production of contract drawings.
  • Specify materials, methods and equipment for projects.
