Position: Graphics Specialist - Extra Help
Location: California

PEOPLE FIRST – Conduct fair, accurate, secure, and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence.

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking a Graphics Specialist to assist in the upcoming June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election
. The Graphic Specialist will perform skilled information design using a variety of desktop publishing systems, and may also include some graphics design and layout. The position will work closely with departmental staff to define needs, evaluate alternatives, and develop the most effective educational and informational materials to represent the Office.

The ideal candidate is proficient with multiple desktop publishing/graphics programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and presentation software such as PowerPoint. The candidate will also have success managing and meeting multiple deadlines and strong proofreading skills for format, spelling, and grammar.

The current position is a full-time, temporary (extra‑help) role. It is anticipated that the project will be ongoing for up to a year.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • One year of college or technical school training in computers, spreadsheets, graphics, and desktop publishing and two years of experience performing word processing and desktop publishing work, including layout and production of camera‑ready copy.
Knowledge of
  • Graphic design concepts, materials, techniques, and equipment used in commercial art.
  • Federal accessibility standards for web design.
  • Operating principles and practices of multiple word processing/spreadsheet database programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Operating principles and practices of multiple desktop publishing/graphics programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Techniques for estimating time and processes required to meet the document needs of the client.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Proper format for business correspondence, reports, and informational materials.
Skill/Ability to
  • Operate a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing hardware and software in a production setting.
  • Estimate the time and materials required to produce a desired finished product.
  • Design distinctive commemorative election pins.
  • Maintain the department’s public‑facing website ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) and the intranet site.
  • Create visually empowering PowerPoint presentations.
  • Proofread and produce accurate and complete work.
  • Organize and prioritize work and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and files of work performed.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Sit for an extended period at a video display terminal and use a keyboard while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
