This division is a specialist, service-focused business unit providing embedded, outsourced scientific teams to pharmaceutical manufacturers. Unlike traditional laboratory providers, this team delivers on-site scientific expertise - primarily supporting quality control activities during clinical trials.
Role OverviewWe are seeking a proactive and results-driven Business Development Manager (BDM) to lead commercial growth across the US West Coast region (California: Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego).
This is a field-based, “hunter” role focused on developing new client relationships and converting opportunities into long-term outsourced scientific service partnerships.
The BDM will report directly to the North America Business Development Director and will be one of five regional BDMs nationwide.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute a strategic business development plan for the West Coast region.
- Identify, prospect, and secure new pharmaceutical and biotech clients.
- Generate qualified leads and convert opportunities into long-term service agreements.
- Manage the full sales cycle from prospecting through negotiation and contract close.
- Build trusted relationships with stakeholders in Quality, Manufacturing, and Clinical Operations.
- Clearly articulate the value of embedded scientific teams as a service solution.
- Maintain accurate pipeline forecasting and sales reporting.
- Collaborate with internal operational teams to ensure successful service implementation.
- Proven business development experience within life sciences, pharma, or biotech.
- Strong track record of lead generation and closing new business.
- Experience selling services (not only products). Backgrounds in CDMOs, CROs, or similar service-based life sciences organizations are highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently build and execute a sales strategy (true self-starter).
- Strong commercial acumen and financial literacy.
- Confident, credible, and engaging in client-facing interactions.
- Highly self-motivated and comfortable operating with significant autonomy and accountability.
- Strong team orientation and cultural alignment; collaborative but independent.
- Technical or scientific background enabling credible technical discussions with clients.
- Stable career progression within relevant sectors.
- Based near a major airport within California to support frequent travel.
- Must be based in California (Bay Area, Los Angeles, or San Diego preferred).
- Field-based role requiring significant travel to client sites across the West Coast.
- Frequent regional travel expected.
- Base Salary: $85,000 – $125,000 (commensurate with experience)
- Commission: 1% of all revenue generated from self-sourced leads
- Company car provided + All business travel expenses covered
