About The Position
The County of Riverside's Human Resources Temporary Assignment Program (TAP) seeks a Temporary Gate Services Assistant to support the Department of Waste Resources. This full‑time, temporary position requires travel throughout Riverside County to landfill sites, primarily in Blythe with frequent travel to Oasis landfills.
ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for opening and closing landfill sites, assessing and collecting user fees, enforcing all applicable departmental rules, regulations, and policies, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the gate fee booth, collecting operational data, and ensuring accurate records of waste received and revenue collected.
Work Schedule- Fixed 5/40 schedule, including one Saturday per month.
- Screen customers to determine proper classification of waste materials and recyclables according to established regulations and policies; provide directions for dumping locations.
- Prohibit dumping of unacceptable waste and refer haulers to appropriate sites where possible; use platform scales to weigh vehicles, assess appropriate fees, and determine tare weight.
- Calculate and collect appropriate fees based on classification and weight or volume of each load; accept cash, credit card, or Department account transactions; issue receipts and record refuse type.
- Prepare daily revenue and receipt reports; maintain scale and scale house in safe and operable condition; prepare and deliver daily bank deposits.
- Provide customer service; answer inquiries and provide general information about operating hours, site locations, and directions; explain landfill rules, safety protocols, and dumping instructions.
- Troubleshoot computer equipment issues; relay problems to appropriate staff and process customers manually if needed.
- Open and close site daily, assist with traffic control; control traffic when area is congested; notify supervisor of stalled vehicles; ensure site is clear of visitors at closing.
- Keep track of business supplies and inventory; submit requests for supplies as needed.
- Operate and perform checks on diesel generator.
- Refuse entry to customers not conforming to regulations.
Option I
- High school graduation or equivalent (Certificate of Proficiency or GED).
- Six months customer service experience with primary responsibility for cash handling and public interaction.
Option II
- High school graduation or equivalent (Certificate of Proficiency or GED).
- Six months clerk work directly related to landfill operations.
All Options
- Knowledge of simple record‑keeping procedures and basic arithmetic.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply regulations pertaining to County landfill sites; categorize objects consistently; perform quick arithmetic; keep accurate, complete records; enforce regulations with tact and courtesy; work independently; resolve complaints about site operations.
- Valid California Driver’s License.
