Software Engineering Manager III - Core Services

As a pioneer in digital outdoor navigation with a suite of apps, onX was founded in Montana and now serves customers across the United States with more than 400 employees working in remote and hybrid roles. We value innovation, ownership, and a passion for winning as a team, and we are committed to diversity and inclusion in our workforce.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

onX is seeking a Software Engineering Manager III with a passion for building foundational data and platform systems that power outdoor experiences. Your focus will be on leading engineering teams responsible for the core data infrastructure and delivery systems that underpin onX’s suite of apps. You will serve as the engineering leader for our Connected Content and Content Delivery teams and will report to the Director of Engineering.

As

an onX Software Engineering Manager III, your essential job duties and responsibilities will look like:
  • Make great engineers better – support teammates with goal‑setting, professional development, and mentoring; coach engineers through structured growth plans and partner with senior/staff‑level ICs to set technical direction for the teams.
  • Make great software – work with teams to deliver maintainable, high‑quality platform systems that internal and external customers depend on. Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and operations, focusing on reliability and developer experience.
  • Build great teams – work closely with peers to hire smart, creative, and kind engineers. Build and sustain a healthy team culture where ownership and collaboration are the norm.
  • Own operational excellence – establish and maintain production reliability practices including SLO definition and monitoring, incident management, on‑call sustainability, and postmortem culture.
  • Collaborate – manage dependencies between functional teams and facilitate cross‑functional alignment across engineering, Product, Product Design, and business stakeholders.
  • Lead through others – drive projects yourself or direct teams and technical leaders to a desired outcome, challenging and elevating the team to develop robust architectural and technical strategies.
  • Translate – convert business strategy, customer insights, and organizational priorities into clear engineering direction, helping the team understand the "why" behind the roadmap.
  • Communicate – err on the side of over‑communicating. Work closely with product managers and engineers to set ambitious but attainable goals, articulate the value of platform work, and build organizational buy‑in for infrastructure investments.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
  • At least five (5) years of experience directly managing software engineers.
  • Proven ability to lead teams building platform, infrastructure, or data systems that other engineering teams depend on.
  • Experience establishing operational excellence practices: SLOs, incident management, on‑call rotations, and production reliability frameworks.
  • Ability to lead teams through ambiguous, fast‑changing product stages and bring structure and clarity without slowing pace.
  • Experience improving engineering velocity, quality, and observability across teams, and introducing or maturing workflows, processes, and metrics.
  • Ability to connect engineering work to business goals, making decisions that balance customer value, quality, and impact.
  • Comfortable using AI‑assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and velocity, and able to help the team adopt them effectively.
  • Strong communication with executives and non‑technical leaders.
  • Shared passion for and ability to demonstrate onX’s company values.
  • Permanent U.S. work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
  • When applicable, a portfolio of work samples may be required.
ADDED BONUSES
  • Experience with data systems architecture, Graph

    QL federation, or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with mapping, geospatial, or navigation technologies.
  • Experience designing or leading complex server‑side architectures for high‑volume consumer‑facing products.
