Overview
Job Description - Maintenance Worker 2 ). This position is based in Missoula, Montana and supports the maintenance of State Parks, Fishing Access and Wildlife Management Areas sites in the Blackfoot drainage. The employee works as part of the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division regional maintenance team and may lead or supervise in the absence of the Maintenance Team Supervisor. Responsibilities- Operate equipment such as mowers, powered weed trimmers, pickups, ATVs, chainsaws, power and hand tools.
- Perform basic repairs to building structures (including historic preservation at certain locations: windows, doors, floors, walls, fences).
- Scrape, paint, stain or treat building and structural surfaces (including windows, doors, picnic tables, shelters). Install, repair and maintain wood, steel, wire and other fencing, signs, posts, kiosks, etc.
- Conduct landscaping activities (mowing, tree pruning, hazardous tree/sagebrush removal, irrigation and general care of vegetation) to reduce weed problems; operate chain saws, pruning saws, mowers, tractors, weed trimmers and backhoes as required.
- Make general repairs to equipment and notify others when extensive repairs are required.
- Perform specialized tasks requiring training in areas such as plumbing, welding, carpentry, roofing, electrical, historic building stabilization, and ensure codes or standards are met where applicable.
- Perform plumbing and sewer system repairs and maintenance (pumps, wells, valves, commodes, sinks, pressure tanks, septic tanks, sewer lift stations, boiler systems and various pipes).
- Fabricate specialized equipment when needed.
- Plan and determine weed control efforts using chemical, social, biological and mechanical methods; assist in producing weed reports for FW P sites.
- Perform weed control tasks and coordinate with Maintenance Supervisor to track and report weed maintenance activities for annual weed reports.
- Coordinate weed maintenance tasks with county spray crews/contractors; set priorities for work and assign sites accordingly.
- Gathers and removes garbage, debris, litter and perform janitorial and cleaning tasks.
- Conduct basic preventative maintenance for equipment and notify others when significant repairs are required.
- Assist with daily maintenance logs, record keeping, ordering supplies, vehicle reports and personnel logs within required time frames.
- Perform manual work to construct/repair property boundary fences to minimize trespass by livestock.
- Maintain roads, culverts and bridges using a range of equipment (backhoes, dump trucks, hand tools).
- Contribute to habitat development and maintenance projects (tree planting, grazing programs, mowing, farming, waterfowl nesting structures).
- Manage large-scale irrigation systems.
- Monitor FW P sites, make public contacts, document incidents and events related to safety and resource impacts.
- May collect fees and educate visitors on rules and regulations; report violations observed to superiors.
- Evaluate and familiarize staff with equipment operation and maintenance as needed.
- Participate in and may lead safety trainings; ensure proper use of PPE for all duties.
- Assist with major maintenance construction and stabilization projects on site.
- In collaboration with the Maintenance Supervisor and regional staff, help establish procedures to complete a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled or manual work repairing, constructing and maintaining buildings, land, water, grounds, and related facilities.
- Demonstrate leadership by ensuring visitor use areas and cultural/environmental resources are respected during duties.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- General maintenance and construction practices related to buildings, facilities and grounds; tool use and care; operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment.
- Carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, welding, electrical and masonry; engine repair and maintenance; industry standards; ability to perform a combination of these skills.
- Operations and maintenance of water, septic and boiler systems preferred.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain high-quality work; follow authority when required.
- Aware of sensitivity and restraint needs in wildlife management areas, riparian areas or historic and cultural sites where applicable.
- Ethical behavior and effective communication with the public about site facilities, regulations, fees and opportunities.
Skills and Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication; computer skills.
- Commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain; safe driving and proper towing protocols.
- Participation in PPE training; ability to train others in PPE if qualified.
- Ability to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator license and continue pesticide operator training with the Maintenance Team Supervisor.
- Water and boiler systems skills preferred; operator certifications or ability to obtain preferred.
