Overview

UM’s Center for Integrated Research on the Environment’s (CIRE)
Environmental Compliance Program Manager serves a crucial role in the organization and will be a key partner to the Director and Associate Director in ensuring continuity of day-to-day operations. The Environmental Compliance Program Manager works with a high degree of independence, decision-making and initiative in managing complex environmental compliance tasks and projects executed for Federal, Tribal and State partners on their installations.

Reporting to the Director, the Environmental Compliance Program Manager will:

Responsibilities
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for task-based research projects as assigned in their area of expertise and successfully manage project budgets and timelines
  • Coordinate, manage and supervise the personnel, equipment and logistics required for successful execution of CIRE projects assigned to them
  • Prepare progress and final reports and other documents and communications as required
  • Exercise independent analysis and judgment in prioritizing situations requiring attention and take steps to ensure strategic and operational priorities progress in a timely fashion
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills in managing the flow of issues and projects and successfully address problems within the Center
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director in managing day-to-day collaboration with Federal, Tribal, State, and private-sector partners
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director in managing internal University of Montana collaboration among faculty, colleges, schools, departments, and labs, and external collaboration with other institutions of higher learning and private companies
  • Assist in the development of task-based research proposals offered and executed by the Center
  • Assist in the review and editing of internal and external pre-award and post-award agreement and contract documents and other associated documents and communications
  • Seek new task-based research opportunities with existing and new Federal, State and Tribal partners and actively and positively promote the capabilities of the University of Montana and CIRE
  • Professionally represent CIRE and the University of Montana at conferences, conventions, and meetings
  • Manage other projects and related functions as assigned by the Director or Associate Director

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Program Management or a combination of a Bachelor’s degree and a professional certification in Program Management and ten (10) years’ experience successfully managing the execution of task-based environmental compliance projects on federal government installations in the Midwest or West.

  • Ability to coordinate and manage complex task-based research projects in the discipline of environmental compliance
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion in working with sensitive and proprietary information
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to perform complex tasks while prioritizing multiple projects
  • Sound judgement necessary to make critical administrative and procedural decisions
  • Leadership skills and the ability to oversee and manage complex, challenging tasks
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong internal and external working relationships
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work projects for self and others
  • Ability to thoughtfully manage conflict
  • Ability to professionally represent CIRE and the University of Montana at conferences, conventions, and meetings
  • Ability to facilitate effective meetings and collaborative processes
  • Ability to effectively present project results and findings to agencies, cooperators and the public
  • Experience with MS Office Suite, including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Position Details

Position is part-time, 0.5 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, and wellness program.
