Job Overview

This position administers programs and performs advanced forestry functions to generate revenue for the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) Program and support natural resource management on USFS and BLM lands. The incumbent applies forestry theory, NEPA, Farm Bill, and Good Neighbor Authority principles and coordinates federal land management activities. The role reports to the Missoula Unit Manager.

Essential Functions

Program Management, Planning and Development: The position plans, designs, implements, and administers complex forestry projects under GNA and other authorizations. The incumbent provides leadership, supervises, and serves as the unit technical expert.

Supervision: The position supervises foresters and seasonal/temporary employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The required knowledge, skills, and abilities are acquired through a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or a related resource management field and four years of progressively responsible job‑related professional experience in forest management, including one year of supervisory experience. The position requires extensive knowledge of forest management principles and practices; equipment and techniques used in forest management projects; forest practices; hazard reduction laws;
Administrative Rules; standards; guidelines; policies and procedures related to forest management operations and activities; and considerable knowledge of both the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and related laws and rules. The role also requires knowledge of DNRC and State Personnel policies, procedures, precedents, organizational structures, employment law conflict resolution, and program requirements.

Special Information

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States, have a valid driver’s license with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent 36 months, and be capable of passing the arduous pack test and performing vigorous physical activity in all weather conditions.

Eligibility to Work
