Overview
Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting an Engineering Project Manager (EPM) in the Missoula District (Missoula Area). The EPM manages highway, road and bridge construction projects, including contract administration, project-level decision making, enforcing contract requirements, providing engineering oversight, staff management, directing contractors, and ensuring public safety on highway, road and bridge construction projects in the assigned district. The average portfolio includes 5-10 projects annually with a total value of about $20 million.
Duties also include managing and directing staff, coordinating Consultant Engineering and Inspection (CEI) administered projects, directing preconstruction and construction survey activities, and assuring that agency and state programs, laws and contract requirements are enforced. The position reports to the District Construction Operations Engineer and may manage crews of 5 to 10 FTEs.

Minimum QualificationsThe required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in construction project management
- Minimum of 1 year of supervision or team lead experience
- Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include:
Level IV Department Certification or Registration as a Professional Engineer
Alternative qualifications include any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
Other Information- House Bill 13, passed by the 2025 State Legislature, increased state employee base pay by $1.00 per hour or 2.5%, whichever is greater, beginning July 1, 2025. The advertised pay rate includes this increase.
