The role involves providing social services to assist in rehabilitation of juvenile law offenders in custody, on probation, or parole. Incumbents make recommendations for actions involving formulation of rehabilitation plans, treatment of offenders, conditional release, education, and employment stipulations.
Responsibilities- Initiate contact with youth, families, victims, and law enforcement; conduct home and school visits.
- Obtain and review collateral information (abuse, neglect, education, mental health, substance use, gang activity).
- Conduct and document FDJJ screening instruments (detention screening, intake screening, Suicide Risk Screening Instrument).
- Formulate case management strategies and make service referrals.
- Make supervision and treatment recommendations to the State Attorney and judicial partners.
- Complete court reports, referrals, affidavits, and maintain current social histories.
- Testify at hearings and support the Department’s recommendation for youth, family, and community.
- Provide crisis intervention and attend transition/exit planning.
- Maintain accurate case data in JJIS and follow departmental policies.
- Four years of experience working directly with adolescents in criminal justice, social services, or education.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to make recommendations concerning delinquent youth, develop case plans, and communicate effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer programs.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (or associate degree with two-year experience).
- Certified State of Florida Juvenile Probation Officer or experience with DJJ programs.
- Experience as a volunteer or intern with DJJ or social services.
- Background in social sciences (social work, sociology, psychology).
- Must maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.
- May require non-traditional hours including weekends and evenings.
- Subject to sex offender check, criminal background checks, and drug screening.
- Valid Florida driver’s license required; acceptable with corrective lenses if worn.
- Must be certified per State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy within 180 days of employment.
- Ergometric IMPACT Assessment and Training Test required for those not currently a direct care worker.
