The Charge Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, quality patient care through the nursing process, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations, and maintaining effective communication with the multidisciplinary team. The Charge Nurse must respond to rapidly changing patient needs, manage staffing assignments, and act as a liaison between patients, physicians, and case management.
Job Functions- Uses the nursing process to provide safe, quality patient care and documents accordingly.
- Ensures compliance with all NMHS policies and requirements.
- Provides patient/family education and serves as a resource for existing staff and new employees.
- Attends the Preceptor class to ensure proper training of new employees.
- Maintains communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic care.
- Leads daily huddles on each unit to ensure proper assignments and identify team members for the shift.
- Delegates tasks and ensures EOC guidelines are maintained on a daily basis for regulatory compliance.
- Projects a caring, friendly, and helpful image to patients and customers.
- Utilizes the patient’s communication board to keep patients and families informed.
- Complies with NMHS behavioral standards and ensures staff RN’s use communication boards.
- Maintains competency by staying informed of changing trends in nursing practice.
- Attends annual review and unit-specific training within the department.
- Performs required continuing education hours online and in classroom.
- Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
- Licensed by the board of nursing for the state.
- Education:
Associate’s Degree Nursing (required). - Licenses and
Certifications:
RN (State Licensure and/or Compact), CPR, ACLS, PALS. - Work Experience:
Must complete RN orientation and approved unit‑specific checklist. - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Leadership skills, effective communication, teaching skills, regulatory knowledge, staffing ratio maintenance, prioritization and delegation, critical thinking, familiarity with NMHS CARES values, and behavioral standards.
- Standing, walking, and sitting as required.
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs frequently.
- Pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping/kneeling/bending, reaching/overhead work, grasping, speaking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination as required.
