CNA - Med Unit PRN - Day Shift – Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital
Job SummaryAssists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and maintains a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
Job Responsibilities- Provides basic nursing care to non‑acutely ill patients within the Nursing Assistant's scope of practice, meeting psychosocial and physical needs.
- Meets communication needs of patients.
- Demonstrates initiative and responsibility expected of a Nursing Assistant.
- Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
- Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
- Performs basic patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the age and standard of care of the patient.
- Communicates observed changes in patient status to the RN, maintaining awareness of the needs of pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
- Assists with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance with techniques appropriate for age and physical condition.
- Provides explanations to patients and families prior to administering care; answers questions within scope of practice.
- Performs treatments and services within scope of practice.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly with team leaders, co‑workers, and physicians.
- Consults other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
- Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
- Assists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills under RN direction.
- Displays flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress.
- Responds appropriately to patients under emergency or physically distressing situations.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; ensures patient confidentiality.
- Interacts professionally with patients/families and involves them in the formation of the plan of care.
- Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies, completing them within shift.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Assists with coordination of patient care under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Utilizes Chart Access to complete documentation of required patient care activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the department supervisor or administration.
- High School Graduate or Equivalent.
- Completion of CNA class desired.
- Current BLS Healthcare certification.
- Good physical and mental health and stamina.
- Ability to lift and move moderate to heavy objects.
- Tolerate prolonged periods of walking and/or standing.
- Manage occasional stress due to workload pressures.
- Exposure to blood and body fluids, hazardous materials and waste, airborne disease.
- Occasional repetitive exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable working conditions (e.g., odors, dirt, grease/oil, noise, temperature fluctuations).
- Basic dexterity and eye/hand coordination.
Previous experience in an acute care hospital or nursing home desired.
Professional Requirements- Meet dress code standards of the assigned nursing unit; appearance neat and clean.
- Complete annual education requirements.
- Maintain regulatory requirements and patient confidentiality at all times.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled; complete work within designated time.
- Wear identification while on duty and use the computerized punch‑time system correctly.
- Complete in‑services and return in a timely fashion.
- Attend annual review and department in‑services as scheduled.
- Attend at least 10 staff meetings annually; read and respond to all monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Represent the organization positively and professionally.
- Actively participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Comply with all organization policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
