We currently have an opening in Mississauga, ON for a Mechanical Estimator.
PositionMechanical Estimator
The Mechanical Estimator is responsible for estimating and tendering mechanical projects, coordinating subcontractor and supplier pricing, and contributing to project planning, buyouts, and handover processes.
ResponsibilitiesHow will you contribute to the team?
- Develop pre-tender estimates and gather all required pre-tender information.
- Review contract documents and prepare RFIs to address gaps or ambiguities.
- Produce detailed cost estimates covering labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, general and indirect expenses, and escalations.
- Structure estimates by area, phase, and division; prepare tender forms and complete submission packages.
- Perform quantity take-offs and calculate associated labour hours.
- Lead internal estimating meetings and maintain organized documentation.
- Solicit, analyze, and compare subcontractor and supplier quotations; coordinate scopes to prevent overlap.
- Prepare bid evaluation sheets and maintain communication records.
- Support procurement activities for materials and equipment as needed; maintain vendor lists.
- Attend site visits, tender reviews, and post-tender meetings.
- Compile project scope details and draft lead letters for tender submissions.
- Participate in tender closings and assist with follow-up activities.
- Support project implementation when required.
- Transition awarded estimates into project budgets and turnover packages.
- Collaborate with site teams on labour and productivity tracking.
- Prepare preliminary estimates, contemplated change orders, and claims.
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Quantity Surveying, or completion of courses in estimating or construction.
- Minimum 4 years’ estimating experience with mechanical contractors.
- Experience in Project Management, Construction Management, Cost Consulting, or field work in mechanical construction is an asset.
- Membership in professional bodies (PEO, AACE, OACETT, etc.) is an asset.
- Strong estimating skills with solid knowledge of construction methods and processes.
- Understanding of CPM scheduling and ability to contribute technical input to tender schedules.
- Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and water/wastewater construction.
- Effective teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with spreadsheets and construction software (e.g., Accubid, Smart Bid).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time, documentation, and multiple projects.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, sound judgment, and performance under pressure.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong time-management skills with the ability to meet interim milestones and deliver estimates for timely review.
- Office and site-based position. When on site, personal protective equipment (i.e. hard hat, safety boots) required at all times.
