Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is responsible for the safe collection, transportation and treatment of wastewater generated by our community. Our work ensures that our lakes, rivers, and streams remain free from disease-causing pathogens and pollutants that are harmful to public health and the environment. Johnson County Wastewater is looking for qualified candidates to fill the position of Collections Assistant Superintendent.

Leads the development of a High Performing Organization through active demonstration of the county's Pillars of Performance, encouraging leadership and empowerment at all levels of the organization; dedicates QII activities for self and staff; actively mentors, coaches and collaborates with employees to enhance the county mission and vision keeping in mind the common goal of leaving our community better than we found it.
Analyzes process control data, CCTV data, and NASSCO data to provide guidance for collection system or treatment process adjustment to continuously meet national pollution discharge elimination system (NPDES) discharge regulations, provide guidance for maintenance and repairs, and meet required risk compliance standards, and EPA requirements; interprets operational or collection system testing and data, and discusses strategies with supervisor; directs, coordinates, monitors and assigns staff in process control or collection system maintenance, equipment maintenance and technical repair and service;
reviews design plans and specifications, makes recommendations on engineering work; provides status reports for O&M maintenance to management; assists in creation of SOP's to maintain service levels and operational safety standards in department; implements treatment adjustments and provides direct supervision to crew; monitors operational databases; reviews Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) trending or Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data to develop staffing and maintenance schedules;
provides status reports of operations and maintenance for Superintendent review; ensures a safe workplace by correcting any safety risks and hazards in a pro‑active manner, informing Safety Training Coordinator as needed. Manage fleet and material inventory.Understands and supervises the diagnosis and troubleshooting of wastewater treatment plant or collection system operations; responds to calls for emergencies, assigning staff, and providing oversight; maintains records of equipment operation logs and records; produces reports that identify system problems or confirms proper operating conditions; schedules training for staff in operations and maintenance, mechanical, and technical fields; evaluates effectiveness of training methods to aid in technical development of staff and ensures competency levels of mechanical skills;
assesses quality of workmanship and provides feedback to staff to encourage improvement and development.Compiles information needed for reports in support of supervision; selects and provides data from daily process control reports and daily KPI reports to ensure goals are met; works with vendors, contractors and other stakeholders responding to technical questions from the general public; answers complaints from the general public and notifies supervisory staff of complaint and actions taken; oversees contractors and vendors by ensuring work is complete, accurate, and meets regulatory requirements.
Communicates directly with the public to ensure satisfaction and service level expectations are actively met.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High school diploma and ten years of experience in mechanical, maintenance, or relevant industrial or field-based work required. Preference given to experience in a water or wastewater environment.
- Two years of experience leading, directing, coordinating, or supervising the work of others is required.
- One year of experience in the operations and maintenance of a wastewater treatment or collection system, and/or water distribution or treatment is required.
- Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must be able to pass background checks.
