RINA is currently recruiting for a Sustainability Consultant to join its office in Genoa within the Sustainability and Business Innovation Division.

Mission

At RINA Consulting S.p.A., as an Energy & Resource Efficiency Engineer, you will play a pivotal role supporting the engineering team dedicated to advancing innovative biofuels and Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) processes. This role emphasises delivering detailed technical analysis, problem‑solving solutions, documentation, and calculations to assist in the transition towards more sustainable energy practices.

Key Accountabilities
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop and support national and European projects concerning innovative fuels, focusing on renewable hydrogen, RFNBO, and advanced biofuels.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of technical documentation required for certification processes of innovative fuel production, ensuring compliance with established certification schemes like ISCC EU and Certif Hy.
  • Conduct and verify detailed mass balances for feedstock, intermediates, and final products, adhering to stringent traceability and mass balance protocols to maintain data integrity throughout production chains.
  • Support the calculation and assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the production lifecycle (well-to-gate and well-to-wheel), validating energy consumption and environmental data in alignment with sustainability objectives.
  • Analyse renewable electricity sourcing by evaluating power purchase agreements (PPAs), guarantees of origin, and self‑consumption models to ensure compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and related legislative frameworks.
  • Provide technical advisory support for cutting‑edge industrial processes including electrolysis for hydrogen generation, synthesis processes such as Fischer‑Tropsch, and emerging carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies.
  • Stay abreast of evolving regulatory and legislative developments related to hydrogen, RFNBO, and renewable fuels across European and Italian jurisdictions, ensuring constant knowledge updates feed into project work and client advisory.
  • Contribute innovatively towards expanding consulting services and technical offerings, identifying opportunities to support clients in hydrogen, renewable fuels, and industrial decarbonization endeavors.
  • Engage in continuous professional development activities, including regulatory training and participation in industry workshops, to strengthen expertise and maintain technical excellence.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Energy Engineering

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of core industrial processes, process engineering, and the fundamentals of mass and energy balances.
  • Academic or practical experience in innovative energy processes such as electrolysis, fuel synthesis technologies including Fischer‑Tropsch, and carbon capture/utilisation concepts.
  • Basic but sound understanding of mass balance principles, GHG emissions calculation methodologies, and environmental performance indicators.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy concepts, including power purchase agreements, renewable electricity certification, and guarantee of origin mechanisms is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar software tools to perform quantitative analyses, tabulate data, and verify calculations efficiently.
  • Interest and willingness to engage with and comprehend the European regulatory context governing energy, climate policy, and renewable fuels, with specific reference to RED II/RED III frameworks and RFNBO delegated acts.
