Position SummaryThe Student Assistant will be responsible for completing tasks and projects assigned by the director of the Sustainability Studies program and by the Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB at University of the Incarnate Word promotes sustainable practices across campus academics, operations, engagement, and administration. As a university that has committed to the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, UIW has committed to addressing how sustainability intersects with ecological and social justice.
The Student Assistant will report the the Director of Sustainability Advisory Board.
- Maintain and report technical issues in Gorman Garden, including compost site.
- Gather materials for compost site, which may include lifting items of up to 50 pounds and walking from various buildings on campus to the compost site in the Gorman Garden.
- Provide support for Garden Days, which will include at least 4 Saturdays a semester.
- Support the Sustainability Advisory Board and coordinator of Sustainability Studies concentration with daily tasks.
- Update assigned social media platforms and website.
- Create marketing materials as needed to promote on-campus events related to Sustainability Studies.
- Print and post fliers around campus.
- Assist with event planning as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Knowledge of Canva, social media platforms, and UIW website.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Reliability.
Current UIW student approved and eligible to participate in the Federal Work-Study program
Required Work ExperienceNone.
Preferred Qualifications- Student is enrolled in the Sustainability Studies concentration.
- Team player with strong written, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Work Hours- Flexible, within the time frame of Monday – Sunday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- At least 4 Saturday Garden Days over the course of the semester, from 10 am – noon.
- Lifting items of up to 50 pounds.
- Walking from various buildings around campus to the Gorman Garden.
