Assistant Camp Director

The Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation is a not-for-profit organization located in Vancouver, BC, whose mandate is to support children, seniors, and individuals with special needs through innovative community projects focused on developing lifelong skills and independence. Our current major focus is Zajac Ranch, a camp in Mission, BC, for children with chronic, life-threatening and/or debilitating conditions.

Located on the shores of Stave Lake in Mission, BC, just one hour east of Vancouver, Zajac Ranch is situated on over 40 acres of pristine forested land. During the summer months, Zajac Ranch provides camps for children and young adults with chronic, life-threatening and/or debilitating conditions. In the off-season, Zajac Ranch welcomes school groups and private rentals. Revenue generated from site rentals supports the delivery of Zajac Ranch medical summer camps.

Responsibilities:

Camp & Staff Management

• Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and training of seasonal staff.
• Provide team development, guidance, direction, and support to camp staff.
• Plan, lead, and adapt staff training sessions and weekly development exercises.
• Ensure effective communication across all levels of camp staff.
• Know, enforce, and adhere to camp policies and procedures.
• Conduct mid-summer and end-of-season staff evaluations with the Camp Director.
• Participate as part of the leadership team in addressing operational issues and challenges that arise during camp sessions.
• Facilitate regular check-ins with counselling staff to support performance and address concerns proactively.
• Provide support to staff working with campers with complex needs and behavioural challenges to ensure safety and positive group dynamics.
• Assume the duties of the Camp Director when the Camp Director is absent.
• Assist with the management and escalation of behavioural incidents alongside the Camp Director.
• Ensure special dietary requirements are communicated and supported by food service staff.
• Manage petty cash, including balancing, tracking, and maintaining the camp store float and inventory.
• Ensure all activity stations are properly maintained and document any damage or maintenance needs.

Rental Season

• Act as host to rental groups during shoulder seasons, providing excellent customer service and hospitality to all guests.
• Liaise with the Sales team at the Zajac Foundation head office to ensure all rental preparations are in place, including programming needs.
• Communicate guest feedback to the Foundation office and support continuous improvement of the rental experience.
• Maintain an on-call roster of programming staff for rental activities.
• Facilitate programming for rental groups when required.
• Plan, lead, and adapt staff training for rental season staff.
• Participate in resolving operational issues that arise during rental programs.
• Assist with recruiting volunteers for camp sessions.
• Review volunteer applications and conduct brief interviews.
• Conduct regular check-ins with volunteers to support their experience and performance.
