Position Summary

This role is responsible for optimizing new and existing injection molding tooling using disciplined scientific molding principles. The position focuses on process development, documentation, monitoring specifications, automation, and continuous improvement to ensure stable, capable, and repeatable manufacturing processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Apply scientific molding principles to sample, validate, and optimize new and existing molds.
  • Document optimized processes and maintain process controls in accordance with established procedures.
  • Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) and capability studies, correlating process adjustments to measurable outputs.
  • Prepare detailed sample summaries and high-quality technical reports, including customer-facing documentation when required.
  • Analyze process data and results to recommend next steps and improvement actions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support problem-solving and process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide process input during mold design reviews.
  • Participate in the design, fabrication, and implementation of robotics, automation, and End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT).
  • Support and guide process technicians and engineers through troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for process technicians and engineers.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot molding processes and associated equipment.
  • Review and approve process modifications in accordance with established change-control procedures.
  • Develop and implement mold process monitoring specifications.
  • Support the development of automated, "lights-out" manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate variance reports to determine whether issues are process-related.
  • Contribute to work cell layout planning and implementation.
  • Provide recommendations for aging equipment and replacement planning.
  • Research and evaluate new equipment for future projects, including vendor communication and potential site visits.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility but may provide technical leadership and indirect guidance to process technicians and engineers.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Plastics Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • 7–10 years of experience in scientific injection molding, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Performance Skills and Competencies
  • Strong discipline in scientific molding methodologies and documentation practices.
  • Broad technical knowledge of injection molding processes, tooling, materials, equipment, manufacturing, and quality systems.
  • High level of initiative with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related tools.
  • Advanced DOE expertise with the ability to correlate process variables to dimensional results.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to recommend practical solutions.
  • High mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
  • Proficiency in robot programming and EOAT design and fabrication.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and train technical personnel.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documentation, reports, and industry publications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, customers, and leadership.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts related to process analysis and optimization.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical instructions presented in mathematical, written, or diagrammatic form.
