Pay Rate per Hour$30.13 – $42.84 hourly, depending on experience and certifications per AFSCME Contract Wage Schedule.
Hours7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may shift to meet operational needs, including call-backs and shift changes per AFSCME Bargaining Agreement.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Operate all aspects of Water Treatment Plant Equipment.
- Maintain water quality to meet IEPA/EPA governed limits.
- Ensure public drinking water safety.
- Report water data.
- Adjust chemicals to maintain safe drinking water.
- Maintain, clean, and repair Water Plant Equipment.
- Operate Pumping Stations.
- Conduct required testing.
- Handle and utilize chemicals.
- Install mains, pipes, valves, meters, and other equipment.
- Inspect new or repaired facilities.
- Perform utility locates.
- Assist with meter readings, postings, and related billing tasks.
- Coordinate all aspects of meter installation, removal, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Assist with water service to customers, including service shut‑off.
- Ensure and verify compliance with backflow prevention programs.
- Ensure and verify compliance with City water and sewer ordinances.
- Perform hydrant flushing and maintenance.
- Perform valve exercising.
- Perform on‑call utility infrastructure repairs.
- Clean and maintain department equipment.
- Lift 50 lbs. and climb stairways.
- Operate a computer, input data into spreadsheets, and use other computer programs.
- Assist with new construction, plant or distribution system modifications, and/or repair plan reviews.
- Perform snow plowing duties.
- Participate in cross‑functional training and/or other duties as assigned.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License (minimum CDL “B” required). If not a Class B CDL, must obtain within two (2) years of hire. The employer will assist with training under a reimbursement agreement.
- Valid IEPA Class A‑D Water Treatment Operator Certificate / License. If not possessing at least a Class Dară; must obtain within eleven (11) months of hire. Employer will assist with training under a reimbursement agreement.
- High school diploma or GED, and at least one year of responsible experience in building and mechanical equipment maintenance or a suitable combination of education and experience.
- Maintain a valid CDL Class B Driver’s License.
- Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of IEPA sampling, reporting, record‑keeping, and operational regulations for surface water plant operations.
- Knowledge of deep‑well operations, including chlorination.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLCs, VFDs, and water booster station operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot plant shortfalls and adjust plant chemistry based on river and weather Mih

Frequent standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling tillbaka; crouching, crawling; talking, hearing; occasionally sitting; frequently lifting 50 lbs. or moving more than 100 lbs. Visual demands include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
Work EnvironmentFrequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; harsh weather conditions, including heat, cold, wet, and/or humid; high precarious places; socks confined spaces; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; vibration. Noise level normally moderate to occasionally loud. All employees must adhere to all safety rules and regulations, including OSHA, Department of Labor, and city policies.
