What You Will Do

The work you'll do is broader than a single task and includes responsibilities across road and snow/ice maintenance and related activities as described below.

Examples of Work
  • Function:
    Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance – learn to perform roadside maintenance, roadway surface maintenance, minor equipment repairs, traffic control, basic construction monitoring, and basic inspection activities
  • Function:
    Snow & Ice – learn to maintain roadways for snow and ice control, prepare and inspect winter equipment, preseason inspections, post-storm cleanup, winter stockpile setup, chemical handling, and documentation for inventory and resource management
Responsibilities by Level

Transportation Associate Level

  • One-year probationary trainee with a career path to Transportation Generalist
  • Learn to perform skilled roadway surface and roadside maintenance
  • Learn to service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
  • Learn to provide traffic control
  • Learn basic construction monitoring and inspection duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Transportation Generalist Level

  • Valid Class B Driver’s License and no air brake restriction
  • Must obtain a Tanker Endorsement prior to hire; must obtain a Class A License within 6 months of hire
  • Experience or education path as described under Exam Part 1 and Part 2 (summary below)

Exam Part 1

Experience:

One year of related work in snow/ice, soils, road maintenance, etc., or farm/operating heavy equipment

Exam Part 1 alternative –

Education:

Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance program (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) may substitute for one year of experience

Exam Part 2 – Math and Reading assessments required for contingent offers; passing scores required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous MnDOT experience as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Drug and alcohol testing; pre-placement drug test required for new employees
  • Background checks and reference checks needed; includes SEMA4, criminal history, employment references, and license verification
  • Commitment to a valid CDL, DOT pre-employment drug testing, and potential random testing
