Journeyman Union Scale. $46.25 per hour (based on experience and/or size and type of equipment)

The Screed Operator is responsible for controlling the screed on the asphalt paver, ensuring proper depth, width, and slope of the asphalt mat during paving operations. This role is essential to producing a smooth, even surface and requires strong attention to detail and communication with the paving team.

Job Duties & Requirements:

- Set up and operate screed controls to apply asphalt at proper grade and thickness.
- Monitor material flow, paving speed, and mat consistency throughout the project.
- Adjust screed crown, slope, and extensions during operation for proper mat profile.
- May perform other related duties to include adding or removing screed extensions.
- Assist with daily pre-operation inspection and maintenance of paving equipment.
- Communicate with paver operator and ground crew to ensure consistent, high-quality paving.
- Observe and correct material segregation, mat defects, and edge lines as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness of screed and related components to prevent material buildup.
- Display a professional and respectful attitude towards co-workers, supervisors, inspectors, and the general public at all times.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors.
- Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
- Follow company and industry safety standards and procedures at all times.
- 1-3 years of experience operating asphalt paving equipment, especially the screed.
- Familiarity with grade and slope control systems (automated or manual).
- Strong understanding of asphalt compaction, temperature requirements, and best paving practices.
- Ability to read grade stakes, plans, and use leveling instruments is a plus.
- Team-oriented with strong communication skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to safety and quality.
- Must be safety-conscious, reliable, and able to work well in a team environment.
- Willingness to work extended hours, early mornings, and weekends as needed.
- High school education or GED equivalent.
