Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 05/15/2025 Closing Date: 5/30/2025 4:00 PM Central Description We are recruiting for a Full-time Temporary vacancy due to a military leave of absence, length of employment is to be determined at a later date. Under the direction of the Jail Administrator, the Correctional Officer is responsible for the care, control and movement of inmates in the Sibley County Jail.

Correctional Officers perform job assignments according to established policies and procedures in accordance with the MN Department of Corrections (DOC) rules and requirements and department policies and procedures. Duties/Responsibilities Performs a variety of duties and responsibilities as assigned. Supervises inmates in their daily routines and monitors the care and control of inmates. Supervises trustees while performing assigned tasks. Initiates the feeding of inmates and supervises housekeeping and sanitation issues.

Distributes and retrieves meal trays and inventories all utensils Counts and dispenses medications as prescribed by physicians. Interacts with inmates, responds to their concerns and/or issues, and resolves or addresses conflict. Deescalates stressful and dangerous conflicts among inmates. Conducts routine inspections in the facility for hazards, contraband, and/or tampering. Makes frequent checks on inmates under watch or special precautions. Maintains shift logs and reports as required.

Conducts detailed inspections of the jail, incoming and outgoing mail and inmate personal property for contraband. Maintains control of all security keys. Performs intake responsibilities to include such activities as creating inmate files, fingerprinting, photographing, arranging for interpreters as needed, recording of personal belongings, conducting inmate orientation, providing information, classifying inmates, medical questionnaires, and gathering necessary documents as needed pares incident reports and maintains jail records and logs in accordance with department operational procedures and requirements.

Participates, assists and represents inmates with Inmate Grievance Procedures. Supervises and monitors family visitors, maintenance and repair staff, attorneys, clergy, volunteers, nursing and other persons within the jail. Transports inmates to court, doctor appointments and/or other facilities. Incumbents of this position are relied upon for providing credible, accurate, and effective testimony in court and elsewhere. It is of the utmost importance that people in this position conduct themselves in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to be able to provide credible, accurate, and effective testimony.

Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required. Serves as a back up to dispatchers and performs communication functions, as needed. Gathers information via radio, telephone, computer terminal, and/or in person; uses independent judgment to assess, evaluate and prioritize requests for service; and determines appropriate procedure and necessary action. Enters initial complaint information on all received calls.

Dispatches personnel and gathered information, forwarding all pertinent details to field units or other appropriate personnel. Responds to requests for patrol units. Verifies that dispatched information is acknowledged and documents the response. Inputs information and responds to inquiries through NCIC system. Maintains activity logs and computerized records. Attends ongoing training in accordance with department requirements.

Minimum Requirements Required Minimum Eductiona High School Diploma or GED Required Minimum Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/Training:
No previous experience required. Significant on-the-job training provided after hire. Identify licenses/certification required:
Valid Minnesota Driver's License After hire incumbents will be required to obtain First Aid and CPR certification, and restraint training. If incumbents back up dispatch, incumbents will be required to obtain BCA certification in the use of systems. Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:
Knowledge of observational techniques to identify potential drug withdrawal, diabetic reactions, suicidal thoughts and psychological symptoms. Knowledge of jail rules, policies and procedures pertaining to job assignments. Basic understanding of the criminal justice system, probation and law enforcement Basic first aid and CPR training Applicable federal, state and local laws relevant to job functions and duties. Basic recordkeeping and use of computers.
