HiPOVor is an international collaborative effort aiming to overcome the challenges involved in creating light beams that carry optical angular momentum with both very high peak power and very high average power. A group of young researchers will explore the entire development chain of these beams, including the devices used to generate them, the study of their physical properties, their amplification, their behavior during propagation, and their practical uses.
The project will train fifteen doctoral candidates to become the first specialists able to produce powerful light beams that carry optical angular momentum and to advance their use in both academic and industrial settings. The work is supported by an interdisciplinary consortium of eight leading universities and nine partners from industry. The academic partners are Tampere University in Finland, the University of Stuttgart in Germany, the University of Warsaw in Poland, the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, the University of Bucharest in Romania, Universite libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, Universite Paris Saclay in France and the CNRS centre known as Femto ST in France.
The project partners from industry together with the academic institutions will support research that is expected to strengthen European scientific excellence, enable new optical technologies, improve methods for producing structures at the scale of nanometres and contribute to more sustainable and energy efficient solutions.
Project title:
High power broadband fiber-based structured light with machine learning tuneable spatio-temporal characteristics
Project tasks and objectives:
The project proposes a new systematic approach for the versatile generation of coherent broadband structured light with machine-learning-reconfigurable modal, spectral and temporal properties at practical output powers, based on nonlinear dynamics in multimode opticalfibers. It will combine controlled spatio-spectral nonlinear interactions, advanced modal decomposition, and data-driven optimization to enable programmable beam shaping directly at the source. The objective is to move from empirical beam self-organization toward deterministic, tunable generation of complex structured fields in compact fibre platforms.
Expected results:
The project will deliver a new toolbox for the generation of structured light, based on all-fiber sources. The platform will enable dynamic control of beam structure and spectrum with high stability and suitable for real-world deployment. The novel sources are expected to open new opportunities across multiple sectors, including medical diagnostics, environmental sensing and monitoring, advanced material processing, and quality control in the food industry.
Planned secondment(s) :
University of Warsaw (Poland), University of Stuttgart (Germany)
The Doctoral candidate will also be involved in dissemination through social media promotion of the network, such as project website, Linked In groups, You Tube video channels, and blogging.
