Responsibilities include duties related to the Food Safety and Consumer Safety Inspector roles within FSIS. The position involves sampling, quality control, sanitation, and related activities in a food manufacturing or production environment or other ingestible item settings. The duties require adherence to established standards and the ability to communicate findings and actions clearly to internal or external contacts.
QualificationsApplicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education. Specialized experience is defined as experience that provided knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption. Examples of relevant positions include consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar roles with responsibility for sampling, quality control, and sanitation in a food production or similar environment.
Specific grade level requirements are described below:
GS-05 Level: At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience providing knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities and substances such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, other food or beverages, or other ingestible substances. Examples include applying sampling techniques and/or field tests, reporting findings, maintaining effective contacts, and ensuring conformance with established standards. Experience in roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or related positions.
GS-07 Level: In addition to the GS-05 qualifications, at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level. Demonstrated ability to independently perform routine, standard duties on a regular basis, and knowledge of regulated food commodities and substances such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or other ingestible substances including pharmaceuticals.
GS-08 Level: At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level. Experience must include working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, basic SSOP and HACCP principles to verify plant responsibilities, basic mathematics and statistics for testing and sampling, and ability to reach and interpret conclusions.
GS-09 Level: At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-08 level. Experience may include working at a more independent level, recommending refusal of exports, and providing temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station.
