The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long term care. Provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan. The NA is responsible for following infection prevention and control policies and the use of personal protective equipment.
This includes assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned residents. The NA assists residents with transfers, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment, and also provides range of motion and passive exercises. The NA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining while creating a positive dining experience for the resident.
The NA assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate, documents resident interactions and outcomes related to care, behavior, activity, and diet, and communicates changes in condition and care concerns to the charge nurse. The NA collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, provides housekeeping and laundry services to help residents keep living areas clean, assists with wellness and recreational programs, and encourages participation.
The NA may also participate in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED (preferred but not required).
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state-certified CNA within four months of starting the position by enrolling in a training program or in the process of obtaining certification through endorsement. CNA training and certification are provided by the facility.
- Must satisfactorily complete yearly department-specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
- Maintain all department-specific required certifications and, when applicable, be certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility and responsibilities, may be classified as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license and must be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions as per Sanford Driving Policy.
