Sample Receiving and Microbiology Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt / Hourly
POSITION LOCATION: Shafer, MN

POSITION STATUS Full – time MONDAY - FRIDAY
Responsibilities- Follow standard operating procedures, perform computer data entry with attention to detail, and multitask. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Receive environmental samples from clients and submit work orders into the Laboratory LIMS system; evaluate and distribute daily laboratory work orders to analysts.
- Distribute sampling supplies to clientele and field personnel.
- Maintain sample work order productivity by evaluating received samples; group samples by parameter to expedite analysis and minimize turn-around time. Priority given to rush and short-holding-time samples.
- Ensure sample compliance with EPA guidelines for collection, storage, and transportation; provide accurate sampling guidance and education to clients; consult with clients to adhere to field and laboratory quality assurance measures; provide guidance on SOPs and EPA methodologies as applicable to sample receipt operations.
- Resolve conflicts and troubleshoot by consulting with clientele, the assigned project manager, and/or Laboratory Director.
- Maintain confidential sample and client information in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Provide billing with work orders, as applicable.
- Maintain laboratory sample collection supply inventory by checking stock and anticipating needs.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by reviewing current EPA and RMB SOPs, quality control and assurance procedures, and coordinate with Facilities Manager and Laboratory Director to maintain OSHA compliance and safety in the workplace.
The type of formal education and type/amount of experience that would typically be needed to successfully perform in the position.
- Experience in Laboratory setting is welcomed.
- Measurable or observable behavior such as skill in word processing; ability to follow procedures; quality control and quality assurance understanding; safety consciousness.
- Knowledge of current technology and trends.
- Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively orally and in writing.
- Judgment and ability to analyze and project consequences of decisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and remain calm in situations requiring sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
- Exposure to sulfuric acid, nitric acid, potassium iodide, and starch solution. Follow safety measures.
- Frequent: walking, standing, bending and twisting; lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs; occasional sitting and repetitive use of hands to operate instruments, computers, printers, copiers.
