Position / Job Summary

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients across the lifespan. This role includes conducting psychiatric assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, prescribing medications, and delivering ongoing mental health care in collaboration with the Behavioral Health team and other JMHS care teams. The PMHNP supports integrated behavioral healthcare within a rural health setting and plays a key role in improving access to mental health services for the community.

The PMHNP will have the option of being scheduled 64-80 hours per pay period (.8-1.0 FTE) Monday-Friday and is a salaried/exempt position.

Essential Functions
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and ongoing management for patients with mental health conditions.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive individualized treatment plans.
  • Prescribe, manage, and monitor psychotropic medications in accordance with scope of practice and relevant regulations.
  • Provide brief psychotherapy or supportive counseling as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Provide patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medications, and mental health conditions.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions, case reviews, and care planning.
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialty care, community resources, or support services as needed.
  • Respond to acute mental health needs and assist with crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and facility policies—including HIPAA, scope of practice, and medication management regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and professional development as required.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of mental health programs, services, and outreach initiatives within the organization.
  • Help others succeed.

    • Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction including appropriate judgment.
    • Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
    • Follow up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers, patients, or residents regarding reported complaints, problems, and/or concerns.
    • Promotes positive public relations with patients, residents, family members and guests.
    • Completes requirements for in-service and annual training, acceptable attendance, uniform dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current PMHNP certification (ANCC or AANP equivalent).
  • Current Minnesota APRN license and prescriptive authority (or ability to obtain).
  • DEA registration (or ability to obtain).
Preferred
  • Minimum 1–2 years of psychiatric practice experience in outpatient, inpatient, or integrated care settings.
