Senior Unified Communications Engineer (Contract)
Location: Eagan MN
Work Model: Hybrid, approximately 1 day onsite per week
Duration: 6 Month

Overview
We are seeking a Senior Unified Communications Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and support of modern enterprise voice and collaboration platforms. This role is a key contributor to the organization's transition to Microsoft Teams Voice and Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) solutions, with a strong preference for Five9 experience. You will serve as a senior technical authority, ensuring reliable, scalable, and secure unified communications across the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a senior engineer and subject matter expert for Microsoft Teams Voice, enterprise telephony, and CCaaS platforms (Five9 preferred).
  • Lead the design, configuration, and deployment of enterprise unified communications solutions, including migrations from legacy voice systems to Microsoft Teams Voice.
  • Create and maintain detailed Visio diagrams, call flow documentation, and technical specifications for telephony solutions.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into practical, scalable voice and collaboration designs.
  • Design telecommunications solutions to support users and departments across multiple business units.
  • Administer, monitor, and troubleshoot telephony hardware, software, and infrastructure, including QoS, call routing, and trunking.
  • Manage and optimize PSTN connectivity, including ISP coordination, number porting, and circuit management.
  • Perform root cause analysis and proactively identify system risks or performance trends, recommending improvements.
  • Support ongoing voice modernization initiatives with a focus on availability, scalability, and seamless integration.
  • Use Power Shell and or Python to automate configurations, reporting, and operational tasks.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, product owners, and service managers to deliver and support unified communications services.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and backlog refinement to improve delivery and team efficiency.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to strengthen team capability and knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise telephony, VoIP, or unified communications engineering.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and administering Microsoft Teams Voice.
  • Experience with Five9 or other CCaaS platforms such as NICE, Genesys, or Cisco.
  • Strong understanding of TDM, IP-PBX, and voicemail or unified messaging integration.
  • Working knowledge of PRI, SIP, H.323, VoIP, analog, and digital telephony systems.
  • Experience designing and supporting dial plans, call flows, and routing logic.
  • Solid understanding of QoS, traffic shaping, packet analysis, and voice performance troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with Power Shell and or Python for automation and systems management.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across business and IT teams with a strong grasp of both technical execution and business impact.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience migrating large, complex environments from legacy telephony to Microsoft Teams Voice.
  • Strong networking fundamentals, including SIP trunking and ISP coordination.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles as they apply to voice and collaboration platforms.
  • Familiarity with ITSM or ITIL practices and Agile methodologies, Scrum preferred.
  • Experience with IVR, ACD, call recording, CTI, and CRM integrations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor peers and contribute to continuous improvement.
