Offer Description

Do you want to deepen your expertise in energy management systems through doctoral research in future renewable-dominated power systems? LUT University is offering a doctoral researcher position in a Wärtsilä-funded research project that combines academic research with industry collaboration.

The rapid increase in renewable energy penetration introduces new stability and reliability challenges in power systems. Identifying the operating conditions under which phenomena such as voltage instability and reduced system reliability occur is essential for resilient and future-proof grid planning.

The doctoral research focuses on developing advanced modeling and simulation frameworks for renewable-dominated power systems, integrating both conventional and inverter-based resources.

Key research aims include defining system strength and stability metrics, evaluating system behavior under varying operating conditions and uncertainties, and investigating the optimal sizing and placement of inverter-based resources to enhance dynamic stability while considering techno-economic trade-offs.

The research will be conducted at LUT Laboratory of Control Engineering and Digital Systems and the Laboratory of Electricity Markets and Power Systems, offering a multidisciplinary environment at the interface of control, power systems, and electricity markets.

The project is funded by Wärtsilä, a Finnish technology company specializing in sustainable marine and energy solutions. The supervisory group includes an industry expert to provide guidance and insights for the research.

What your work will be alike

As a doctoral (junior) researcher, your primary focus will be on completing your doctoral degree within four years. This involves writing a dissertation, typically consisting of four peer‑reviewed journal or conference publications and a summary thesis and completing complementary doctoral studies totaling 30 ECTS credits.

In addition, you will take part in teaching activities for bachelor’s and master’s students and participate in academic duties as assigned, such as attending seminars and conferences, presenting, and contributing to discussions and publications.

What we expect from you

You must hold a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as electrical engineering, control engineering, or a closely related discipline, and demonstrate the ability and motivation to complete doctoral studies within the normative duration of the degree. You should have a strong background in electrical engineering, preferably with a focus on power systems. Experience in modelling, simulation, and control design is considered an asset.

Success in this position requires the ability to work independently, communicate findings clearly, and collaborate effectively within our international research community. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required for performing the duties of this role.

A junior researcher must apply for the right to complete doctoral studies at the LUT Doctoral School within the first two months of the appointment.

What we offer

At LUT, you will be encouraged to pursue your research independently, explore innovative approaches, and develop your scientific expertise. Our experienced supervisors will guide you, and you will benefit from professional development opportunities. The position includes access to a research incentive scheme that rewards high‑quality publications meeting established criteria.

The position is based at the Lappeenranta campus, and you are expected to be regularly present on site.

The employment will begin in March–April 2026 and includes a…
