Job Overview

The Minnetonka Center for the Arts is looking for Summer Camp Visual Art Instructors who will work with the Children & Youth Program Director to prepare and execute visual arts classes for children ages 5-15.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high quality visual arts instruction to children ages 5-15
  • Research themes, techniques, and subjects for classes
  • Prepare all materials and project examples for classes
  • Follow set curriculum (when applicable)
  • Create curriculum and submit lesson plans for classes
  • Oversee the safe use of the studio, materials, and equipment during classes
  • Direct and delegate duties to teaching assistants and interns within a classroom setting (when applicable)
  • Help promote the visual arts and the Minnetonka Center for the Arts to students and their parents
Qualifications

Children’s Instructors must hold a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. Instructors must be able to commit to scheduled class hours and dates. Some teaching experience is necessary and dependability, initiative, organization, creativity, strong interpersonal skills, and classroom management are paramount. There are some opportunities for emerging artists.

History

The Minnetonka Center for the Arts is a non‑profit community based organization providing instruction in the visual arts. Founded in 1952, the Art Center has been offering community and educational access to Minnesotans throughout the western suburbs, Twin Cities, and beyond.

Mission

In the belief that the visual arts are indispensable to a healthy community, it is the mission of the Minnetonka Center for the Arts to provide teaching excellence, quality exhibitions and cultural enrichment for people of all ages, interests and abilities.

Program Offerings
  • Educational visual arts programs for all ages and abilities. Classes and workshops introduce students to the history, techniques, materials and processes of the visual arts through hands‑on, interactive experiences.
  • Community programs include school and organizational partnerships, adult classes, children & teen classes, family and multigenerational workshops, Art Center tours and private lessons.
  • Summer Arts Camp provides visual arts opportunities in all media throughout the summer to children ages 5‑15.
  • Special Events in which members of the community can participate in visual arts activities, educational opportunities, view exhibitions and take part in artist talks and lectures.
  • Exhibition spaces which exhibit art work created at the Art Center, locally and nationally.
Work Schedule

Summer Arts Camp classes take place 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from June 8 through August 20. Classes are 3 hours long (AM & PM options available) and run 1‑10 days in length depending on the age group and medium. Work schedules may vary, depending on camp enrollment and class needs. Ideal candidates may work from 2 weeks to 11 weeks.

Summer Arts Camp staff normally work between 8:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Some half‑day opportunities may be available.

MCFTA Summer Building hours:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
Tuesday, Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.;
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.;
Sunday, closed.

Compensation

Summer Arts Camp teacher pay starts at $20.00 per hour.
