Position Overview
The priority of this position is to create the conditions within Spring Lake Park High School for students to successfully navigate Social Studies curriculum in the 21st century, preparing students for post-secondary success, whether they pursue enrollment, enlistment, or employment immediately following high school. Our school has an amazing population of diverse learners, with wide ranging skills. We are looking for teachers who can create personalized and engaging experiences so that each student feels valued, inspired and has a sense of belonging, resulting in college readiness and aspirations for success.
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for developing students' knowledge and skills in history, civics, economics, geography, and related fields of social studies. The teacher fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility by engaging students in the analysis of power structures, global connections, and diverse perspectives. The position promotes informed citizenship and prepares students to participate effectively in a interconnected society.
Essential Functions
- Develops and administers Social Studies education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to personalized learning and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Develops unit plans and instructional materials and translates unit and trimester plans into learning experiences that challenge each student, and incorporates flexible use of time, space and resources.
- Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions utilizing primary and secondary sources, mass media, and diverse cultural perspectives.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
- Effectively assesses and communicates each students progress in their learning with the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
- Works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure each student is known by name, strength, interest and need and this information is harnessed to ensure each student experiences success and graduates with post secondary plans.
