The priority of this position is to create the conditions within Spring Lake Park High School for students to successfully navigate Social Studies curriculum in the 21st century, preparing them for post‑secondary success whether they pursue enrollment, enlistment, or employment immediately following high school. Our school has an amazing population of diverse learners with a wide range of skills. We are looking for teachers who can create personalized and engaging experiences so that each student feels valued, inspired, and has a sense of belonging, resulting in college readiness and aspirations for success.
PositionPurpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for developing students’ knowledge and skills in history, civics, economics, geography, and related fields of social studies. The teacher fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility by engaging students in the analysis of power structures, global connections, and diverse perspectives. The position promotes informed citizenship and prepares students to participate effectively in an interconnected society.
EssentialFunctions
- Develops and administers Social Studies education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to personalized learning and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Develops unit plans and instructional materials and translates unit and trimester plans into learning experiences that challenge each student, incorporating flexible use of time, space, and resources.
- Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions utilizing primary and secondary sources, mass media, and diverse cultural perspectives.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs, including students with special needs.
- Effectively assesses and communicates each student’s progress in their learning with the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
- Works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure each student is known by name, strength, interest and need and harnesses this information to ensure each student experiences success and graduates with post‑secondary plans.
- Focused on knowing each student by name, strength, interest and need, leading to personalized student work and learning experiences.
- Confident in their abilities to teach in multiple modes (brick and mortar, hybrid, and online).
- Able to approach learning from a student‑centered platform rather than a teacher‑centered platform.
- Innovative and can blend learning across multiple subject areas, and regularly collaborate with peers in learning communities within the school and district.
- Interested in ongoing communication with families, not only to report success and struggles, but to build relationships.
- An educator who can analyze data, set goals, learn individually and collaboratively, implement new learning, and monitor, assess, and adjust practice.
The successful candidate must have earned a B.A. or B.S. degree and possess highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work harmoniously with a wide range of students, families, and staff members. Additional demonstrated qualifications include a commitment to the equitable education of all students, creative planning and organizational skills, and experience working with and celebrating diverse learners.
Licensing RequirementsCurrent Minnesota 5‑12 Social Studies Licensure, or eligibility, required.
