SALARY: $20.09 - $21.82 depending on experience
POSITION OVERVIEWThe Behavior Support Specialist works under the supervision of a Special Education Teacher/Qualified Mental Health Professional/Behavior Interventionist/Social Worker to assist students experiencing dis-regulation (actions/behavior/language). The BSS works as part of the WIN team to achieve the program's vision and mission of helping every student be successful. The BSS works with a varying number of students in a one on one situation as well as a group/classroom setting.
The BSS also works with the special education teacher, mental health staffand other staff when appropriate.
- Previous experience in Correctional Facility or Juvenile Detention Center preferred.
- Paraprofessional Certification, AA degree or 2 year of college, or a 4 year college degree.
- Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues to provide appropriate intervention and programming for students and maintain a positive work environment for all.
- Implement positive behavior interventions and supports to support student progress, reinforcing positive behaviors, utilizing dis-regulation techniques, and redirecting inappropriate behaviors. May be required to use restrictive procedures.
- Support the development and implementation of individualized education plans in accordance with district practice and state and federal requirements.
- Comply with Governing Board policies and administrative practices, including those procedures outlined in the staff and student handbooks.
- Help to maintain safety of all students and the environment.
- Utilize data to inform programming decisions and planning for student success.
- Use flexible thinking and adaptability to address student needs and respond calmly during crisis situations.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication with staff, students, and parents that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.
- Basic computer and email skills.
- Ability to be Certified in Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI).
- Ability to be Certified Handle With Care Trainer.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and up to adult‑size body weight with two‑to‑three‑person lift.
- Ability to support a student's full body weight up to adult size.
- Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, bending, leaning, and repetitive motions.
- Occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement.
- Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and may require wearing of personal protective equipment.
- Locations are generally moderately noisy.
