About the position

The Department of Corrections is hiring an Adult Basic Education Teacher at the Moose Lake Facility. This position exists to provide literacy, English Language Learning, secondary credential, post-secondary preparation, and other adult basic education (ABE) instruction in a well-managed and comprehensive instructional environment to support offender Personal Education Plans. In addition, this position will develop and use curriculum based on state ABE standards and integrate methods of instruction – to include whole class, small group and individual instruction – to serve all types of learners and learning styles.

To assess, monitor and record offender progress and to direct teaching assistants and offender tutors to promote effective offender learning.

Responsibilities

The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete a tuberculosis screening prior to hire.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Professional Minnesota teaching license. An applicant with a Tier 1 license may be considered if the DOC is unable to recruit an applicant with a Tier 2, 3, or 4 teaching license in the specific licensure field required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a current Minnesota Tier 3 or 4 teaching license.
  • Experience working in an education setting.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting.
  • Experience teaching Adult Basic Education.
  • Full-time teaching experience as a licensed teacher.
Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation. Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy.

New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
