Position OverviewThe Costume Shop Supervisor manages the operational needs of the costume shop including inventory, maintenance, and expense tracking. Additionally, this position supervises student workers assigned to the costume shop, ensuring execution of costume designs and overseeing production wardrobe crew.
Working ScheduleThe anticipated work schedule consists of 35 hours per week during academic terms and 10 hours per week during breaks. These hours may be adjusted based on the needs of the department or campus.
CompensationThe expected starting salary range for this position is between $40,000 and $41,350. The salary range has been prorated based on the part‑time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job‑related factors such as experience, training, licensure, certifications, market factors, departmental budgets, and responsibility.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities Operations- Oversee construction, purchasing, fitting, repairing, cleaning, storing, and cataloging of costumes
- Oversee, organize, and maintain departmental costume inventory
- Maintain, organize, and repair shop equipment as needed
- Maintain and organize costume shop spaces, including storage, dressing rooms, and the shop itself
- Collaborate with costume designer(s) to create quality design within production budget
- Plan, evaluate, supervise, and budget all elements related to costuming and makeup for departmental productions
- Attend production and departmental meetings as necessary to coordinate costume need and timelines
- Attend fittings and rehearsals as necessary to address costume needs and adjustments
- Take performer’s measurements
- Provide/pull rehearsal clothing and shoes as needed
- Establish costume and makeup guidelines for performers
- Oversee run‑of‑show duties, including maintenance and cleaning of costumes during run
- Train and oversee backstage costume crew as needed
- Manage and track costume expenses related to individual productions
- Manage and track expenses related to operating and maintenance costs of the costume shop
- Oversee and facilitate costume rentals to the rest of campus
- Provide consultation and advice to senior majors doing performance comps
The Costume Shop Supervisor is responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision of a team of up to 12 student workers. This includes training and leading these crews, ensuring they gain necessary skills for executing costume designs, maintaining all costume stock, and keeping shop equipment in working order.
Education/Experience/Skills Required- BA in theater, art or design or equivalent experience
- 5 or more years of experience in a theater or production setting
- In‑depth knowledge of patterning, sewing, and costume construction
- Millinery, dying, corset making, makeup and hair, craft work
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
