Description

This position performs a variety of clerical duties requiring responsible judgement based on knowledge of the principles of accounting. Decisions are made in terms of established policies and procedures with difficult, non-routine, or complex problems being referred to a supervisor. Instructions may be received as new projects are assigned, but the employee will generally work with considerable independence, using discretion and judgment in completing duties.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Finance Director, and is evaluated for accuracy and adherence to standards.
Examples of Duties
  • Prepares and/or reviews payment vouchers and purchase orders for the weekly accounts payable process, including the review/reconciling of vendor invoices and statements and credit card invoices and statements. Coordinates resolution of incomplete submissions by other City departments.
  • Prepares weekly vendor ACH file and prints weekly paper vendor checks.
  • Reconciles daily receipts, including municipal liquor sales. Prepares City Hall daily cash deposits.
  • Reconciles various bank and other monthly account statements using spreadsheets and databases.
  • Prepares periodic general journal entries and miscellaneous billing for most ongoing City activities.
  • Prepares and submits various state reports including Sales Tax, Fuel Tax, Unclaimed Property, Lobbying, etc.
  • Processes liability and property damage insurance claims; interacts with the claimant and adjuster and follows through to settlement of claims. Prepares the annual renewal application for liability and property insurance. Coordinates changes to property and liability insurance coverage, including tracking vehicle titles.
  • Coordinates purchase of office supplies and other goods/services for City Hall, including maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs other duties related to the position as assigned, including backup to other positions in the Finance department.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:
    • A combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a two-year degree in Accounting.
    • Two years responsible accounting experience.
    • One year training or experience in email, spreadsheet, and accounting software programs.
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Three or more years responsible accounting experience.
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
    • One year training or experience utilizing computerized accounting system.
    Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    • Skill in the operation of a computer, using word processing and spreadsheet software.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
    • Ability to make varied arithmetic computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
    • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to coordinate and follow through on work tasks and projects to completion.
