Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of a highway and heavy civil construction company by performing day-to-day accounting functions, assisting with job cost accounting, and ensuring compliance with internal controls, GAAP, and applicable federal, state, and MnDOT requirements. This role works closely with project managers, payroll, and operations to provide accurate and timely financial information for construction projects.

• General Accounting
  • Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, depreciation, and monthly adjustments
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and credit card statements
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP
• Construction & Job Cost Accounting
  • Track and analyze job costs by project, cost code, and phase
  • Review job cost reports and investigate variances with project teams
  • Assist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition
  • Support project forecasting and cost-to-complete reporting
• Accounts Payable & Receivable (Support Role)
  • Process vendor invoices and ensure proper coding to jobs and cost codes
  • Assist with subcontractor payments, lien waivers, and compliance documentation
  • Support customer billing, including progress billings and retainage tracking
  • Reconcile AR and follow up on outstanding balances as needed
• Compliance & Reporting
  • Assist with sales/use tax reporting, including construction-related tax considerations
  • Support audits, including financial, DOT, and workers’ compensation audits
  • Maintain documentation to support compliance with MnDOT, federal, and state requirements
• Process Improvement & Support
  • Assist with internal control documentation and process improvements
  • Support accounting system maintenance and reporting tools
  • Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
• 1–3 years of accounting experience; construction or job cost accounting experience preferred
• Experience in highway, heavy civil, or union construction strongly preferred

• Working knowledge of GAAP
• Familiarity with construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Spectrum, Sage, or similar) preferred
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and basic data analysis

• Understanding of job cost accounting and construction financial reporting
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Effective communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
