About the Organization
Don’t Shoot Guns, Shoot Hoops uses basketball as a tool for violence prevention, leadership development, and healing. Our programs support youth and young adults living in or impacted by communities affected by gun violence.
We are launching our first Girls to Women Basketball & Leadership Camp, an overnight program designed to build confidence, discipline, leadership, and sisterhood through sport and mentorship.
Position SummaryThe Basketball Coach / Mentor is responsible for leading basketball instruction while also serving as a positive role model and mentor for campers. Coaches help teach life lessons—such as teamwork, accountability, and confidence—through the game of basketball.
This role is ideal for candidates who love the game, believe in mentorship, and understand the power of sport to positively impact the lives of young people.
Key Responsibilities- Lead basketball drills, practices, and games
- Teach fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship
- Encourage confidence and growth at all skill levels
- Serve as a mentor and positive role model
- Support leadership and life-skills programming
- Supervise campers during scheduled activities and overnight hours
- Collaborate with Program Coordinators and staff
- Uphold camp rules, safety guidelines, and expectations
- Identify as a woman (required for this program)
- Basketball playing and/or coaching experience
- Experience working with girls or young women
- Strong communication and mentorship skills
- Comfortable working with youth impacted by violence or trauma
- Positive, patient, and team-oriented
- Must be available for the entire duration of camp
- We strongly encourage women and individuals who identify as women, and those with experience working with girls and young women, to apply.
Preferred:
- Youth coaching experience
- Experience mentoring or teaching life skills
- Trauma-informed training
- CPR/First Aid certification
