Summary

The facilities assistant provides critical maintenance and custodial support to ensure American Indian OIC’s campus is clean, secure, and operationally functional.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean building interior by cleaning, stocking supplies, emptying garbage, and other various maintenance duties
  • Maintain the exterior of the building by removing litter, mowing grass, edging, and removing snow and ice from steps and walkways
  • Assist with setting up interior and exterior spaces for classes, meetings, and special events
  • Provide support for security issues and attend security team meetings
  • Assist facilities manager and external contractors with maintaining and fixing plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems
  • Close and secure facilities

Qualifications

Required:

  • Cultural competency working in a diverse environment and ability to create a welcoming atmosphere for participants and colleagues
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to take initiative to identify facilities needs and work independently to address them or troubleshoot them
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to learn about the campuses’ mechanical systems

Preferred:

  • Understanding of the area’s Indigenous communities, cultures, and practices
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous experience operating maintenance equipment like lawnmowers, snowblowers, vacuums, leaf blowers, carpet cleaners, floor polishers, etc.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office products
Physical Demands & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, climb a ladder, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit for long periods. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment noise level may occasionally be high.

Compensation, Schedule, & Status

This is a nonexempt, full-time position with a starting salary of $22 per hour and qualifies for medical, dental, and retirement benefits. Up to five weeks of paid time off can be accrued during the first year of employment with increases in subsequent years. American Indian OIC also offers at least 10 paid holidays annually. Free onsite parking is available, and our campus is easily accessible by bike, bus, and light rail.

The facilities assistant generally works Monday-Friday from 10am-6pm, however occasional weekend and evening hours will be required.

About American Indian OIC

American Indian OIC (AIOIC) was established in 1979 to address the education and employment disparities faced by Native American families living in and around South Minneapolis. The organization was founded as a career counseling provider, but now offers multi-faceted education and workforce development services through its alternative high school, Adult Basic Education program, job training center, and career counseling services. The goal of these programs is to give people the foundational education and support needed to pursue meaningful career opportunities.

Although it was founded to serve people of Native descent, most of AIOIC’s programs are open to anyone regardless of race, creed, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation. Annually, more than 1,000 people from the Twin Cities metropolitan area and affiliated with 40 distinct tribal nations from the US and Canada, utilize AIOIC’s services.
