Position: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR)

Summary

This position specializes in the operation of a super conductive Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI) - a highly complex computerized imaging device which employs the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves to acquire images.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification:
    All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R).
  • Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • In modalities that require advanced certification, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on-the-job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
  • Education:

    Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program – evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree – accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other recognized accrediting agencies.
  • Credentialing Standards:
    Public Law 97‑35 – the Consumer‑Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981 – requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Applicants must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds these standards and be certified as radiographers.
  • Physical Requirements:

    See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. §§ 7402(d) and 7407(d).
  • Grading Criteria:
    In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade:
    Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist – GS‑9. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out assigned tasks independently.
  • Experience:

    At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑8), directly related to the position, demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire assignment‑specific KSAs:
    • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while performing complex scans and procedures.
    • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record and health care providers.
    • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
    • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
    • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques, and universal precautions.
    • Knowledge of pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural care of patients.
  • Preferred Experience:

    1–2 years of experience.
Duties
  • Maintain the cleanliness of assigned work area and keep necessary supplies stocked.
  • Report shortages and equipment failures to the supervisor.
  • Contact lead technologist, biomedical engineering, or service vendor to arrange service when needed.
  • Observe patient safety guidelines as set forth in department and medical center policies and procedures.
  • Interact courteously and cooperatively with supervisors, colleagues, and others in the organization to contribute positively to the effective operation of the radiology service.
  • Handle differences of opinion in a business‑like fashion.
  • Accept duties/assignments outside the normal workstation for additional training or coverage as directed by the supervisor.
  • Advise the radiologist of examinations that require immediate attention while the patient is undergoing the examination.
  • Assist the radiologist in the administration of contrast material agents.
  • Practice sterile techniques to prevent contamination.
