Position: Ambulatory EMT (Casual) - Pediatric Mobile Clinic

Position Overview

Hennepin Healthcare is hiring for a casual Ambulatory EMT in our Mobile Health Unit Clinic headquartered in downtown Minneapolis. This role is supported by grant funding that is approved through June 2026. The Pediatric Mobile Health Unit is part of the Department of Pediatrics and provides care to patients who are reluctant or unable to be seen in a traditional healthcare facility.

The mobile unit team consists of a provider (pediatric nurse practitioner or pediatrician), an EMT, and a student or resident. The team provides basic health assessments, well‑child exams, basic labs, referrals to medical homes, and connects families to community resources that address social determinants of health. The EMT will deliver care in the mobile unit and at various community locations, administer immunizations, and support pop‑up clinics at schools, parks, and places of worship.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Ambulatory Clinical Technician, the EMT performs a wide variety of medical and clinic support functions. The EMT assists with indirect and direct patient care and performs specialized medical procedures as determined by established Policies, Procedures, and Clinical Protocols within an Ambulatory setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide care appropriate to the patient’s condition and age, including pediatric, geriatric, and general population
  • Obtain and document patient’s reason for visit, vital signs, screening questions, allergies, and medications
  • Perform a variety of screenings (vision, hearing, developmental, pain) and record information in the patient’s medical record
  • Set up and prepare patients for examination or procedure, providing assistance to the LIP
  • Administer immunizations and medications within scope and under orders and direction from an LIP
  • Collect, label, and process specimens (phlebotomy, urinalysis, swabs) with appropriate technique and record details in the medical record
  • Assist nurse or LIP with procedures requiring sterile and clean technique
  • Use universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment as needed
  • Document and report patient observations, care, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Follow appropriate documentation procedures on paper for approved department–specific procedures
  • Engage and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration to meet patient needs
  • Activate emergency response and/or initiate Basic Life Support when appropriate
  • Provide standardized instruction based on written materials; refer patients requiring further teaching to a nurse or LIP
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Indirect patient care/clinic tasks include but are not limited to the following:

  • Promote patient welfare and independence by communicating and understanding patient reactions to the environment
  • Maintain stock of medications and immunizations as assigned
