Job Description

Performs waived to highly complex medical laboratory tests in different areas of the lab. May have oversight as a key operator of a work area and participates in the development of technical procedures, forms, miscellaneous documents, method validation, and implementation. Trains students and new employees, and participates in the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program. Additionally, may function as Charge Tech in absence of Lead/Supervisor/Manager.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Performs waived to highly complex laboratory procedures, including analytical testing according to policies, procedures and federal regulations (CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, HIPAA), evaluations for accuracy, resolves complex test problems, recognizes and documents results that require action, and performs instrument maintenance & quality control with remedial action.
  • Accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens, instructing customers on procedures, verifying patient identification, obtaining samples via venipuncture or capillary puncture, collecting and labeling specimens, and evaluating specimen acceptability.
  • Customer service and patient order management: greets patients, performs check‑in process, responds to questions and needs, evaluates orders for completeness, follows up as needed, ensures regulatory & billing compliance, and schedules and releases orders in the electronic medical record.
  • Administrative duties: stocks, rotates and requests supplies; participates in departmental or system‑wide meetings, projects or committees; performs clerical duties; may assist with department scheduling; participates in development of technical procedures, forms, miscellaneous documents, method validation, and implementation of new technologies.
  • Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements: participates in training of employees and students, assists in direct observations for annual competency program.
  • CLIA defined responsibilities: 493.1425 Standard (moderate complexity) and 493.1495 Standard.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related laboratory field including clinical rotations or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA '88.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Possess or be eligible to receive appropriate HHS-approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). If not certified, must obtain required certification within 180 days of hire.
Physical Demands
  • Light work: lifting weight up to 20 lbs occasionally, up to 10 lbs frequently.
Pay Range

$37.54 to $50.94 per hour. The pay described reflects the base hourly pay range. Starting rate depends on experience, education, and union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and other differentials may be available to increase pay.
