Job Purpose

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) at Pathway to Recovery is essential in providing specialized, client-centered treatment services to individuals dealing with opioid use disorders. By incorporating the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria and a strong focus on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), this role is pivotal in supporting clients through their recovery journey with both pharmacological and therapeutic interventions.

Key Responsibilities

● Conduct comprehensive assessments using ASAM criteria to determine appropriate levels of care, with a particular focus on suitability for MAT as part of the individual's treatment plan.

● Deliver individual counseling and group therapy sessions, integrating MAT education and support, and tailoring interventions to enhance recovery outcomes for clients with opioid use disorders.

● Collaborate closely with medical staff to coordinate MAT, ensuring seamless integration of medication management with counseling and behavioral therapies in accordance with ASAM standards.

● Develop, monitor, and adjust treatment plans in partnership with clients, focusing on achieving and maintaining recovery goals, with an emphasis on the effective use of MAT within a comprehensive treatment approach.

● Provide education to clients and their families about opioid use disorder and MAT, dispelling myths and reducing stigma associated with medication-assisted recovery.

● Maintain detailed and timely documentation of treatment services, MAT progress, and client responses, adhering to ASAM and regulatory documentation standards.

● Stay abreast of advancements in MAT, including new medications, dosing strategies, and evidence-based practices for treating opioid use disorders, to continually enhance care delivery.

● Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing to the cohesive delivery of integrated care plans for clients in the OTP.

Required Qualifications

● Licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in the state of Minnesota, with specialized training or certification in MAT where available.

● A minimum of two years of experience in substance use disorder counseling, with a significant focus on opioid use disorders and MAT.

● Demonstrated proficiency in applying ASAM criteria in the assessment and treatment planning of clients with opioid use disorders, particularly in the context of MAT.

● Familiarity with the pharmacological aspects of MAT, including medication options, mechanisms of action, and potential side effects.

Preferred Skills

● In-depth understanding of the complexities associated with opioid addiction and the role of MAT in recovery.

● Exceptional communication skills, capable of providing clear explanations of MAT options and supporting clients through their treatment choices.

● Strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills, working effectively with medical professionals to optimize treatment outcomes.

● Commitment to evidence-based practices and continuous professional development in the field of opioid use disorder treatment and MAT.
