Finance & Compliance Manager

Location: Twin Cities, MN | Status:
Full-time, exempt, hybrid

Salary range: $60,000-$70,000

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Summary

The Finance & Compliance Manager leads A Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Foundation’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and strong internal controls. This role manages accounting functions, budgeting processes, financial reporting, and audit preparation while supporting grant compliance and organizational planning.

The Finance & Compliance Manager partners closely with the Executive Director and program staff to maintain financial health and uphold nonprofit best practices.

Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Accounting
  • Manage all day‑to‑day accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, cash flow, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Complete Quick Books entries, reconciliations, and monthly financial close processes.
  • Prepare accurate, timely financial reports (P&L, balance sheet, budget vs. actual, statement of activities).
  • Maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP and strong internal controls.
  • Lead annual audit preparation and serve as primary contact for external auditors.
  • Oversee contract and grant budgeting, compliance, reimbursement, and reporting.
  • Partner with staff to develop project and program budgets and support financial analysis, cost projections, and rate determinations.
  • Lead development of the annual organizational budget and provide financial insights to support strategic planning.
  • Monitor project budgets and collaborate with staff to ensure alignment with financial expectations.
  • Reconcile donor database and accounting software with bank statements on a regular basis.
  • Submit payroll and ensure accurate PTO tracking and retirement match calculations.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Maintain and strengthen financial controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, nonprofit accounting standards, and regulatory obligations.
  • Support organizational risk management practices related to financial operations.
  • Maintain insurance documentation and support operational risk management practices.
Board & Governance Support
  • Prepare monthly financial updates and budget reports for the Executive Director and Finance Committee.
  • Attend Finance Committee and Board meetings as needed.
Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Experience managing financial operations in a small to mid‑sized nonprofit.
Skills & Attributes
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management.
  • Experience with HR processes or policy maintenance.
  • Experience with grant budgeting and reimbursement processes.
  • Proficiency with Quick Books and Excel/Sheets.
  • Strong analytical and budgeting skills.
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborative team player who builds trust across staff and leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Reliable internet access for hybrid work.
  • Ability to travel for meetings and events.

Preferred Technical Experience
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud, Raiser’s Edge, or similar donor databases preferred.
