Position SummaryWe seek an experienced Tax Manager to establish and lead our tax function as we scale operations and advance major project phases. This strategic role optimizes our tax position, maximizes mining-related incentives, and ensures full compliance amid complex federal, state, and local requirements. The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented CPA with strong knowledge of tax law, ready to build processes in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.
Job ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Chief Financial Officer or Managing Director – Finance will be responsible for the following:
- Maintain and manage fixed asset books and ledgers to accurately track depreciation, support tax credit claims, and ensure compliance with relevant tax provisions (e.g., bonus depreciation, Section 179, investment credits).
- Research, identify, and avail all applicable mining-related tax benefits, incentives, and credits, including Minnesota-specific taconite/mining production tax benefits, occupation tax considerations, and federal incentives for mining/manufacturing investments.
- Oversee tax compliance, including preparation and filing of federal, state, local, and industry-specific returns (e.g., Minnesota production/occupation taxes).
- Manage state and local tax (SALT) obligations, including property taxes, sales/use taxes, and mining-specific levies.
- Set up, lead, and execute tax-related projects and assignments, including process implementation, tax provision preparation, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Conduct tax research, planning, and risk assessment to support business decisions and project financing.
- Coordinate responses to tax audits, inquiries, and notices from federal, state, and local authorities.
- Collaborate with finance, legal, and operations teams on tax implications of capital projects, fixed assets, and international elements (if applicable).
- Stay current on changes in tax laws, particularly those affecting the mining and steel industries.
- CPA certification required.
- Minimum of 5+ years of progressive tax experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or consulting.
- Deep fluency in U.S. tax law, with strong research and analytical skills.
- Experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or capital-intensive projects; prior mining company experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of mining-specific taxation (e.g., depletion, production taxes, taconite incentives in Minnesota) is a significant advantage.
- Prior consulting experience (e.g., Big 4 or regional firm) is a plus.
- International tax experience (e.g., transfer pricing, foreign tax credits) is a plus.
- Proven ability to lead tax projects, build processes from the ground up, and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
- Proficiency in tax software and ERP systems; strong Excel skills required
